Beautiful Essence

 'Demure'

 'Intuitive'
Last night a group of guys came by the Kirkland Art Walk and asked me to tell them about my women with the colorful hair. I froze, I bumbled, I rambled - I told them everything except about what the women were about. After they left a guy who works at LizzyKate Tea (hosting me for the Art Walk) told me I desperately needed to work on my 20 second Elevator Pitch!

So in the pre-dawn hours this morning I reached into my soul to pull out the story of what these women mean. Yes, telling the real bits leaves me a bit raw and vulnerable, but I also feel calmer, lighter, more centered.

This is what I should have told them:
Years ago I was mourning my aging body, my fading looks, my growing invisibility when a friend told me to look in the mirror every day and tell myself "I have a Beautiful Essence". Now I see not just myself, but other women, with new eyes - I look deeper and see so many stories and colorful life experiences. In my paintings I'm drawing out the beautiful essence, the colorful complexity, inside women.

So excited that 'Intuitive' and 'Demure' will be going to lovely new homes! I now have prints and cards of these (and the other girls) available in my Etsy Shop: https://www.etsy.com/people/beverlyashgilbert

On the Menu Tonight

Hate grocery shopping, but love having been...
On the menu tonight:
  • Wet smoked salmon (marinated first in white wine and lemon juice)
  • Mom's special tartar sauce (mayo of course, loads of lemon juice, a sprinkle of worcestershire sauce, finely chopped zesty pickles and onions, whole mustard seeds, dill weed)
  • Grilled asparagus (just olive oil, salt and a sprinkle of lemon),
  • 5 bean salad (another of my Mom's amazing recipes - perhaps I'll share one of these days),
  • Roasted multicolored beets
Best part? Enough for left overs tomorrow!

His latest project

A 1909 Kimball - this poor piano was thrashed. My hubby rescued it about 30 years ago from a nursery school junk pile, cleaned up the outside, but it has taken this long to open it up and do some major repair. Numerous keys broken, a couple missing, no pedals, and that is just the obvious work.

Cleaning it out we found sparkle glitter, poker chips, crayons and a cigarette butt stowed away in the innards. Lots of work ahead - when he finishes the inside, I'll get out the tung oil and finish up the outside.

Celebrating All People

For the record... this girl celebrates the bonds of friendship and commerce that weave through all countries around the world, the sharing of talents, creativity, good will, kindness and goods that transcends borders. In fact, this morning I am eating an avocado from Mexico, and drinking a mug (hand painted in Italy) of coffee whose beans were harvested in Sumatra. I buy hand dyed silk from a woman in Australia and dyed wool from a woman in Czechoslovakia. In turn my books, fiber art and paintings travel the world - my painted girls advertise a spa in Germany and adorn a garden wall (as a mosaic) in South Australia. I have a dear friend from the Netherlands, another from South Africa, and yet another whose husband is from China... oh did I mention Mom is Canadian. I celebrate all people, all countries, all belief systems, all backgrounds.
